Basic Strokes (基本笔画 Jīběn bǐhuà)

When we learn Chinese characters, we must know that the characters are made out of simple single strokes, all of them variations of only eight basic ones. All of the strokes have their own names and are written according to a few rules.

Stroke order
1. horizontal → vertical (先横后竖 xiān héng hòu shù)
example : 十2. left falling → right falling (先撇后捺 xiān piě hòu nà)
example : 八3. top → bottom (从上到下 cóng shàng dào xià)
example : 三4. left → right (从左到右 cóng zuǒ dào yòu)
example : 川5. outside → inside (先外到内 xiān wài dào nèi )
6. compound → in → close (先里头后封口 xiān lǐ tóu hòu fēng kǒu)
7. middle → left → right (先中间后两边 xiān zhōng jiān hòu liǎng biān)
